Recent Dreams

Andrew from Dream Come True My son Andrew’s dream occurred on Friday, June 29th, 2007, but to hear him talk about it, you’d think it just happened yesterday. From the time that Andrew was two, he’s been asking me if he could meet and have lunch with Steve from Blue’s Clues. He would ask me at least once a month if I would call Steve to see if he could come over. Each time he asked, I would always tell him that I didn’t know Steve’s phone number, but that if I did, I would call him. This went on for years. Steve actually left the show, and was replaced by his ‘brother’ Joe. Even though Joe was now the main guy, Andrew still preferred to watch the Steve episodes, and still continued to ask to see him.

I’ve always heard about Dream Come True. Many of Andrew’s classmates have taken some fantastic trips and I always thought how wonderful these trips were. I never thought I’d be asking Dream Come True for anything because the dreams I’d heard had never seemed to be what Andrew would want. I attended a Break-a-thon event two summers ago at the Swain School and visited the Dream Come True booth. It suddenly occurred to me that Andrew did have a dream. He’s had one all along and that maybe, with DCT’s help, it could finally be realized. Shortly after we met with Mary and Tammy and left the wish in their hands.

I don’t know exactly how they did it, but the rest is history. Andrew is now 13 years old and last summer he finally got to meet Steve. A beautiful white limo picked us up in the afternoon and drove us to De Sales. Steve was performing as Amadeus and had agreed to meet with Andrew prior to one of his shows. We arrived at De Sales with a picnic lunch packed and were led to a conference room. Shortly after, Steve arrived, wearing his famous shirt, and spent a full hour with Andrew. They had lunch together- peanut butter sandwiches (Steve does not like to mix the jelly), plenty of hugs, pictures and autographs. Steve even reminisced about some of his favorite episodes and sang a few of the songs from the show. I wish all of you could have seen the smiles on Andrew’s face. To say they were huge is an understatement. Steve was absolutely amazing. A true sweetheart. After the full hour, we got back in the limo, went to dinner and went home.

Andrew’s room is now covered with autographed pictures from Steve. We talk about his adventure with Steve at least weekly and it still makes both of us beam. It truly was one of the most special things I’ve ever been part of and I’m so thankful that Andrew was able to realize his dream. Thank you to all of you who help to make these dreams a reality. I know our family will never forget it.
